2019 Legacy West Pioneers’ Chapter 66 Scholarships – CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNERS!

Chapter 66

Legacy West Chapter 66 awarded two $1000 scholarships this year. The winners are Olivia Dow and Amber Patton.  Congratulations to these winners, and best of luck in your college careers. Olivia and Amber will be honored at the club luncheons in their area in May. 

Amber Patton is a Graduating Senior from Mountain View High School in Tucson, AZ. Amber has maintained a GPA of 3.69 and is a member of the National Honor Society and was also on the Principal’s Honor Roll this year at Mountain View. She has been accepted into the College of Fine Art, within the School of Art at the U of A, with a focus on Illustration and Design for 2019-2020.  Amber has volunteered these skills as commissioned art for nonprofits and will be working on our forthcoming Pioneer cookbook. In addition, she has volunteered at Treasure 4 Teachers of Tucson and the Interfaith Community Services, as well as several other Pioneers projects. Amber is very involved in community activism in support of voting rights and education as well as being a member of the Tucson Junior Strings for the last 3 years. Amber’s Grandmother (Patti Pace) and her mother (Anna Patton) are Pioneers in our Southern AZ Telecom Pioneers club out of Tucson. Congratulations Amber!

Olivia Grace Dow, Chapter 66 Scholarship recipient, was honored at the May 22, 2019, Pioneer luncheon at The Beatitudes. Olivia’s high school graduation ceremonies were the same day as the luncheon so she was unable to attend to receive her certificate of scholarship that day. Caron Personke and Ellen E. Miller met May 31st with Olivia and her grandmother, Pioneer Pat Rentmeester, to present the certificate of scholarship with the congratulations of Phoenix Thunderbird Club and Arizona Chapter 66.

Olivia will begin her journalism studies this Fall at ASU Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, which is known as the best journalism school in America. Her acceptance into Barrett Honors College, an honors-based community of high-achievers at ASU, is a highly coveted honor. Her goal is to be a field reporter for National Geographic or Associated Press. Not only has Olivia maintained a GPA of 3.87, she volunteers weekly at the elementary and junior high school she attended by tutoring students, grading papers, and assisting the teachers in many various ways. She notes her volunteering is her way of saying “Thank You” to the school and teachers who helped shape her into the successful person she is today.  Oliva Thank You Card

Phoenix Thunderbird

AMANDA MARIE WIECE, Legacy West Phoenix Thunderbird Club Robert M. DeBusk Scholarship recipient, was honored at the May 22, 2019, luncheon at The Beatitudes, but was unable to attend owing to her class schedule. Amanda and her mother, Wendie D. Wiece, were guests for lunch with Caron Personke and Ellen E. Miller on June 11, 2019. Amanda was presented with her scholarship certificate.

Having been on the Fast Track Program of Nursing at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Amanda will graduate in December 2019. She has maintained a 3.77 GPA, and remained on the Dean’s List and President’s List. Amanda started volunteering at a young age and has volunteered at an assisted living home, animal shelter, St. Mary’s Food Bank, and through a national mother-daughter volunteer organization. Even now, while carrying a full academic load, Amanda volunteers at least 12 hours a week in Valley hospitals.

Amanda anticipates applying for a Residency program, which is a volunteer program at just three Valley hospitals. Amanda also plans to volunteer abroad for a while on a medical mission trip where she “can volunteer her time and skills to help others who wouldn’t be able to have this care and support without volunteers.”

Not only is Amanda’s grandmother, Vikki Dahle, a Pioneer with Phoenix
Thunderbird Club, her grandfather on her father’s side of the family is also a Pioneer from his career with Mountain Bell/USWest in Utah. Caron also signed up both mother and daughter as Pioneers in the Friends and Family program. Thank you for joining, and WELCOME TO PIONEERS!

Southern Arizona Telecom Pioneer Club

Legacy West SATPC awarded their $1000 scholarship to Ayla Patton. She will be recognized at the May club luncheon in Tucson.

Ayla Patton has been attending the University of Arizona for the past 2 years. 2019/2020 will be her Junior year. In that time, she has been on the Dean’s list each semester and has maintained a GPA of 3.58. Ayla was officially accepted into the College of Education at University of Arizona and has received a teaching fellowship from Marana USD throughout the remainder of her college career that will extend into her first year of teaching. Her current society memberships are:  Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization and NSCS, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars honor society for high achieving students. Ayla volunteers with our partner: Treasures 4 Teachers of Tucson as well as Peter Howell Elementary School in the Tucson Unified School District. Ayla’s Grandmother (Patti Pace) and her mother (Anna Patton) are Pioneers in our Southern AZ Telecom Pioneers club out of Tucson. Congratulations Ayla!

Madlyn Rollins Bequest Scholarship
Congratulations to the 2019 winners of $1000 scholarships provided by the Madlyn Rollins bequest, through Legacy West Pioneers’ Chapter 66. These students are graduating seniors from Apache Junction High School. Madlyn Rollins was a Pioneer in Arizona, and at her passing her husband set up the bequest as an ongoing fund for students from the Apache Junction High School, Apache Junction, Arizona.  Each year ten students are selected by staff at the high school, and this year they will be honored at a presentation on May 6th at the high school. Congratulations to these winners!  Arizona Chapter 66, part of Legacy West Pioneers, wishes them success in their future endeavors.  Apache Jct TY letters 2019

May 6, 2019 was the scholarship presentation ceremony at Apache Junction High School for the seniors who won various scholarships.  The Madalyn Rollins Fund, a part of Arizona Chapter 66, Legacy West Pioneers, presented certificates to 10 deserving senior for $1000 each.

Pioneers Patti Pace, Ellen Miller and Louise Rebholz were on hand to celebrate the awards being given to the seniors. It was a night of much joy, as many of these seniors were surprised when their names were called, some more than once, to accept their scholarships. We are proud to carry on the tradition of the bequest, aiding the continued education for Apache Junction HS students. Stan Janesky, a Pioneer partner in Apache Junction, had been volunteering on the committee to judge and award these scholarships for many years. He sadly passed away in February of this year, but would be pleased that the efforts will continue to carry out the mission of the bequest. The Madalyn Rollins fund was established in 1990 in memory of his wife by Cal Rollins, and has supported many students over the years.

Congratulations to all the outstanding students who competed for these awards.  Pioneers are happy to encourage academic, community and volunteer efforts in these young people
